Since Michelle’s first home visit, she has had the ability to put me at my ease and give me the self-belief that I can cope not only with the surgery but with life afterward.
Hi, my name is M (age 14). Within 12 weeks of being diagnosed with severe Crohn’s Disease, I had undergone an operation for an ileostomy. The whole process felt completely overwhelming and extremely scary for myself and my family. My Stoma nurse’s care, support, kindness, sensitivity, and humor have been invaluable to me. Since Michelle’s first home visit, she has had the ability to put me at my ease and give me the self-belief that I can cope not only with the surgery but with life afterward. From marking my tummy with where the stoma would go to holding my hand in hospital whilst I cried - she has helped me get through - and in addition, helped my Mum be strong whom I rely upon heavily. Every time Michelle visits we all end up laughing, especially when Olly (my Stoma) is misbehaving! Mum and I desperately wanted to visit my Auntie & Uncle in Spain and I honestly don’t think we’d have managed to go without Michelle’s help, advice, and encouragement. She even messaged us whilst we were away. She is always a phone call away and responds promptly. Michelle has volunteered to attend my school phased return meetings with me and contacted my doctor on her own initiative to pursue support. Michelle has no idea how much her positivity, work ethic, and expertise have such an amazing impact on the young people she cares for (and their families). She really makes a difference and definitely goes the extra mile.
