She was so in tune with what was going on with this patient and family's emotions, and it was just so nice to witness Miriam in action, who consistently demonstrates what it truly means to be a nurse.
Today, I watched Miriam care for a patient and his family all day. This patient was dying, but he was very young, and his parents were having a really hard time accepting it. I watched her have a thorough discussion in multi-D rounds with the doctors about the patient and his family and the difficult time they are having. I watched her advocate for the parents by offering advice on how to emotionally approach his parents based on the rapport she had built with them. I also watched her take the time to be present during discussions with palliative doctors throughout the day as well (despite being busy herself). When I went in with Miriam later in the shift to help her change and reposition him, I was just really moved by Miriam's rapport with the family and with the patient. The parents were reluctant to leave while we provided cares, but Miriam insisted so that they could take a few minutes for themselves just to take a break. She assured them in the only way that Miriam could - delicately and compassionately, yet firmly. She asked them to allow her to care for their son, and she explained everything she was going to do so that they would not worry. The patient's father hugged Miriam and thanked her. It was just so clear in this brief interaction that these parents trusted Miriam with their son at a really vulnerable time. I also watched her joke and laugh with the patient while trying to make him as comfortable as possible. She was so in tune with what was going on with this patient and family's emotions, and it was just so nice to witness Miriam in action, who consistently demonstrates what it truly means to be a nurse. She is an impactful and fierce nurse, and it is evident in her daily work how much she cares for her patients and how much pride she holds in the excellent care she provides them. She consistently demonstrates our JHH "We Care" professional practice value, and I wanted to recognize her for providing exceptional patient- AND family-centered care. She has been a nurse for a long time now, and she deserves this award a million times over.
