I was admitted to ORMC being extremely anemic. I was diagnosed with a heart attack and also underwent colon cancer surgery at this time. My hospital stay was a long 13 days. I underwent multiple procedures and unpleasant "prep". I had an endoscopy, EKGs, colonoscopy (and prep) and then more "prep" for the colon cancer surgery. The thought of being in a hospital is not pleasant but the staff there can make a huge difference. After returning home from this stay, I often thought about a particular nurse who made a huge difference during this time for me. Her name is Monique Caban.
I believe Monique went above and beyond to make this situation for me as comfortable as possible. Monique was so extremely compassionate to me always trying to address my every pain and concern. Even when I didn't complain, she went out of her way to bring me different things to address my discomfort - different creams, soothing wipes - whatever it took and she was quick with responding to my needs. I also found Monique to be very educated and extremely intelligent. Whenever I had a question about a procedure or medication, not only would she know the answer, but she would also return with printed out documentation about the medicine for me to read. I have never met a nurse like Monique.
Monique was not only so attentive and compassionate but she was very personal. She has the sweetest disposition and always found a way to make me smile or laugh. She made me feel like I had a friend there which was extremely comforting.
When her shift was over every day she would always come in to say goodnight and I would tell her how sad I was that she was leaving. But she always told me which day she would be back.
After being discharged I often spoke to my husband about Monique and wished I got her last name so I could send her a thank you card.
Well, I had the opportunity to thank her in person when I was re-admitted this past December for 3 stent placements. When I heard they have you recuperate in a room down on the cath lab floor if there are no rooms available upstairs on the 3rd floor, I told the doctor that I wanted to go back up to the 3rd floor, which I did, because I was hoping to see Monique again. Seeing the familiar faces from my last stay was comforting but when I heard Monique's voice a huge smile came on my face. Although she was not my nurse this time she remembered me and took the time to visit with me and once again made me smile and laugh. This was all so comforting. In addition to the many nursing duties - this is what makes a good nurse - one that you will remember.
Monique is one of the most compassionate, caring and intelligent nurses I have ever met.
