However, in this case, I saw more than a nurse treating a patient. I saw someone interacting with kindness and compassion.
I wanted to bring to your attention something I observed during Sunday's shift. During that shift, the first responders brought in an eight-year-old patient with autism who had eloped from his home and was found wandering on the highway. I don't know the patient's medical details, but it appeared he had developmental delays; he was very active and hitting at times. His nurse was Monique de Vito. I observed how amazing Monique was with him. She was attentive, kind, patient and gentle. The way she spoke with him, how she would walk with him pointing to things on the walls and calming him down. Not once did I see her express any frustration or irritability. As a mom myself of a seven-year-old boy with autism who elopes, the situation definitely hit close to home. Our ED is full of amazing nurses who I love working with. However, in this case, I saw more than a nurse treating a patient. I saw someone interacting with kindness and compassion. She's amazing!
