When Nancy came to my room to introduce herself, check my vitals and hang a bag of antibiotics, we reviewed my medical situation and treatment being provided by the hospital. I felt strongly that enough time had passed and information gathered that I would probably be going home that day. She was professional, competent and friendly. Shortly after she left, I was seen by my surgeon (whom I loved) as the surgical consultant who stated quite clearly that this was not a surgical situation. When Nancy read his notes, she came to me and we again discussed my situation, which at my request was mostly what I had to do to get discharged.
She said I needed labs, which had been drawn and were back, and an abdominal xray. And she pulled out her phone, asked if radiology could do that right away and they agreed. She got the paperwork (ticket) printed, rounded up a student nurse and a wheelchair and sent me off to radiology within 10 minutes. Although the floor was busy, Nancy persisted in checking with radiology for the report. She never stopped following up and she checked back with me every 45 minutes to keep me in the loop. Nancy put the paperwork in my hands within 10 minutes of the discharge order, went over each of them, made sure I was comfortable with the decision, asked if I had any further questions and handed me over to the escort she had waiting at the door to walk me out. I am grateful that she was my nurse.
