I told her that I was scared and confused, and she explained the process and gave me comfort in a way that felt genuine and did not just placate to keep me calm.
Nanica quickly established herself to be the calm in the storm for our family. Going into the birthing process, things went slowly for us, and she was so kind and patient with us. She just made us feel safe and validated. When it came time to push, Nanica led the count and was loving and encouraging. However, when baby started to crown, the doctor left the room for some reason. While my family was scared and confused that the doctor had left, Nanica kept her composure and pulled the emergency cord to get the support she needed. Again, being the calm in the storm. When all the other staff came in, our baby needed to be whisked away for some immediate care and support. The deluge of 15-plus nurses and doctors into the room was very overwhelming, and being separated from the baby while having to watch the baby get her lungs suctioned was a scary time for us. In all the chaos, I asked to speak to Nanica. I told her that I was scared and confused, and she explained the process and gave me comfort in a way that felt genuine and did not just placate to keep me calm. I felt safe confiding in her, and she repaid that trust with kindness and compassion. Many years from now, I will remember how she treated us and how much we appreciated being lucky enough to have her as our nurse.
