My husband and I delivered our son at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. We learned the evening prior that he had passed away in utero, unexpectedly and with no apparent cause. As we prepared for a stillbirth delivery, Nichole was our rock. In addition to providing exceptional care for me, she truly cared for the ten family members that stayed in our room around the clock. Nichole spent time getting to know each one of us and truly helped us to find celebration in what was otherwise the worst day of our lives. Nichole stayed hours past her shift ending so that she could be with us until we said goodbye to our baby. She helped us give him his first bath, took beautiful photos for us, and to this day, has been one of the few people who has taken the time to tell us how beautiful he was. I will never, ever forget the way she just silently wept with us while we bathed our baby. The next morning, after what I'm sure was only a few hours of rest, she stopped by my recovery room twice. Again, she just cried with us, and I can't express how comforting it was. My husband and I are emotionally destroyed by what happened, but I tell my son's birth story to everyone who will listen. It was still the most beautiful day of my life, and it is due to Nichole's empathy, support, and celebration of our baby's life. I am so grateful that she is a part of his story.
