With her years of experience, Nicki is skillful in caring for our moms, babies, and their families and is a trusted member of our team.
In order for daisies to grow, they need sunshine, and sunshine is what Nicki brings to our unit. Nicki has been a nurse at North Memorial Health Hospital for over 20 years. For the better part of those years, she has been a member of our Labor and Delivery Unit, also known as the Family Birth Center. Nicki has cared for mothers, babies, and their families as they have come to us during their pregnancies, their labor, their births, and during the time afterward as they prepare to bring their newborns home. With her years of experience, Nicki is skillful in caring for our moms, babies, and their families and is a trusted member of our team. Not only does she care for those that we serve, but she also precepts new team members and works in the charge nurse role.
Regardless of the role, Nicki creates an environment of lighthearted cheerfulness, which puts patients and team members at ease. At times, we encounter women who experience difficulties in their pregnancies. Some need to stay with us for several days or even weeks during their pregnancies. This can be an uncertain and discouraging time for them. Nicki really shines when it comes to these moms as she establishes a rapport with them and helps to find ways to improve their stay. Oftentimes when the babies of these moms are born early and need NICU care, Nicki continues to reach out and encourage these moms as they come back to visit and care for their babies.
As a preceptor, Nicki helps guide and mentor new team members, ensuring that they learn and understand all that is needed to work in this specialty area. As a charge nurse, Nicki steps in to help out others and ensures that the unit is equipped, stocked, and ready for whatever may come our way. Her leadership ensures that our nurses have the things that they need in order to best care for their patients. In addition, Nicki shows accountability in our area by taking part in unit committees, education, and simulations, just to name a few.
For several years now, Nicki has managed our unit’s Sunshine Fund. In doing so, she has helped us recognize and connect with team members who have experienced a major life event by sending them cards, flowers, gift baskets, or other items, depending on the circumstance. This helps team members feel that they are remembered during a time of trial or a time of joy and that they are a valued part of our team.
These are just a few examples of how Nicki shines, bringing joy, caring, and compassion to our unit. In doing so, she has helped countless women and their families get through some of the most challenging and/or miraculous times of their lives. She has also helped to equip and inspire our team so that they have what they need to do their job well. It is for these reasons that I would like to honor Nicki by nominating her for the DAISY Award. Thank you for your consideration.
