Nicole coordinated his pain medications to keep him comfortable and gave him his first glimpse of the sun in nearly a week. She also gave him so much more than she realized in terms of recovery.
My boyfriend and I were in a freak accident in which a roof collapse seriously injured him. With a broken spine, spinal cord injury, and crushed ribs, it was safe to say that he had every reason to be down in the dumps. By day 6 post-op, he was struggling with pain control and the reality that he was currently bed-bound at the age of 26 with a long road to recovery ahead of us. It was also a holiday, which is normally a holiday that we can all tolerate missing due to work, but this day carried more weight as we all sat in the ICU. Nicole came in that morning and brightened our day with the idea that none of us would have even dreamed about, given our current position. She had already taken it upon herself to call neurosurgery and the trauma team to ask if taking K outside was a possibility. They gave her the go ahead and she rallied a friend to accompany her. At this stage in his recovery, getting lifted from bed to chair was incredibly painful for K, but also incredibly important to his recovery. The promise of going outside after made it all worth it for him. Nicole coordinated his pain medications to keep him comfortable and gave him his first glimpse of the sun in nearly a week. She also gave him so much more than she realized in terms of recovery. This was the first day we all started to see the old K coming back despite the accident. Thank you, Nicole, for what will always be, to us, more than just a trip outside!
