The NICU team, led by registered nurse Niomi Hatmaker, started an annual event in the NICU to ensure that their families have a safe and happy holiday. Even the parents of some of our NICU team members were involved in organizing and helping at the event! It takes a village!
The second annual event was held on December 15th, 2023. Parents of current NICU children and some NICU graduates were invited to "shop" free of charge for their admitted child(ren) and their children at home. This event helps those families who may need assistance during the holiday season while caring for an ill child. There were a multitude of donations of new toys and books donated by our very generous NICU staff, leadership, and provider teams in addition to staff from other areas. These items were picked out by the employees or purchased by the team leading the event through donations to an Amazon Wish List. The conference room in the NICU was filled with books, stuffed animals, and toys donated by employees.
Once parents picked items for their children, NICU team members were on hand to wrap the gifts. While waiting for their gifts to be wrapped, the parents were provided snacks and hot cocoa. Niomi and the team also worked with our PR team (Stephanie Scheer, Veronica Gabriel, and Jody Bott) to secure a special guest appearance from Hooper, the Detroit Pistons mascot!
As a result of this event, the NICU team was able to provide gifts for 37 families! Nearly 100 children received books, stuffed animals, and toys because of the work of the NICU team and all the generous donations, some of which were donated by team members outside of the NICU. Through this event and the amazing generosity of the NICU team and others, hope and some relief during the holiday season was provided for the NICU parents.
This was an amazing team effort led by our bedside staff nurses in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and truly demonstrated the HFH mission and values. The collaboration and dedication of the team in arranging this event and the volunteers who made it possible should truly be recognized for the amazing work they did.
This is just one example of the amazing work that the NICU team does while providing care to our smallest and most vulnerable patient population. From running the Literary Littles Program, participating in the Community Baby Shower, arranging the NICU reunion event, and Miracles on Main, the NICU team consistently demonstrates collaboration and caring in their approach. Thank you!
