Nikko is a great example of a nurse who creates a safe learning environment, a healthy workplace environment, performs her job thoroughly, and tries to connect with the patient and their family.
Nikko Guzzi was taking care of a very sick and unstable patient. She has also taken care of this patient on multiple occasions. On this day, Nikko went about her shift as usual - with a great attitude, smile on her face, and no complaints. Towards the end of this shift, Nikko saw this patient's hemoglobin had dropped dramatically. She took the right action and immediately notified the provider and called to prepare code drugs preemptively. She used her skills as a critical care nurse to identify these signs and communicated them clearly and effectively. While communicating with the providers and other nurses, Nikko increased her vasoactive drips in an attempt to keep this patient's blood pressure stable and sent down for blood products. She also took the time to explain every step to the patient's grandma, who was present in the room. Before this patient acutely decompensated, Nikko compassionately told the grandma that the patient's mom should come back to the hospital because it was becoming evident that this patient was likely not going to survive the night. Nikko acted quickly when this patient decompensated and initiated a code in order to get more people to help resuscitate this patient. Unfortunately, the patient did not survive this code event, and Nikko stayed in the room to help the patient's family members hold the patient one last time. Thanks to Nikko's teamwork mindset, clear communication with every member on the team, and competent critical thinking and assessment skills, other staff members have claimed this code was "one of the most well-run code events in a long time". Nikko is a great example of a nurse who creates a safe learning environment, a healthy workplace environment, performs her job thoroughly, and tries to connect with the patient and their family.
