Nila Castillo, RN, BSN, CCRN from the PACU is an exceptional role model for all who work with her. Patients experience her compassion and their needs and safety are always placed first. Nila always goes above and beyond but this one situation stands out among the many. Recently, we had a patient on the O.R. schedule that was postoperatively going to be on a respirator, assigned to an ICU bed and this patient required a “special Bariatric bed.” Nila found out about this special concern and on the morning of surgery got the ball rolling to make sure the patient’s safety was not at risk and the patient was escorted to the ICU safely. She did this by aligning every team that needed to be involved. Communicating with admitting, alerting the physicians and nurses in the O.R., and careful planning with the ICU nurses were the first step. But there was a unique obstacle that Nila most importantly assessed. The elevators were under construction at the time and this special bed did not fit in the alternate elevator. Great effort was taken by Nila to go into the O.R., collapse the bed to the correct size and measure it. Nila then went to the 4th floor elevators (alternate route) and measured the width of the elevator to ensure that the bed would fit. When the patient was ready to be transferred, Nila called security and had an entire team dedicated to getting this patient to ICU safely which included a PACU staff R.N., respiratory to maintain the patient’s airway, and security timed at each elevator so there was no lapse in time. The foresight and planning by Nila was only one example of the consistent role model she is for the staff. Those that work with Nila witness her strong leadership and conscientiousness. Patient’s who are cared for by Nila always know that their needs are placed first.
