Watching the patient's family's eyes light up when Olivia showed up to provide that much needed help was very encouraging for me and a great example of the kind of Hospice Nurse I want to be.
Olivia was the first hospice nurse I worked with (she oriented me), and I am so grateful for that. I am new to hospice, and honestly, at first, I had my doubts if I could do it. Could I be a great nurse to my patients and their families at such an important time in their lives? Could I could handle all those emotions, all the questions, the fear they had of dying or the fear of losing someone they loved? When I worked with Olivia, she made it seem so easy. She is such a natural with her patients and families, showing that much needed compassion and empathy for each one. Taking the extra time, providing that individualized care meant so much to them. Watching the patient's family's eyes light up when Olivia showed up to provide that much needed help was very encouraging for me and a great example of the kind of Hospice Nurse I want to be. Even after my orientation was over with Olivia, she has always made herself available to me for any questions or problems I might have. Because she has the patient's best interest in mind and wants them to get the care they deserve.
Another thing I appreciate about Olivia is when I follow her patients, they always have nothing but the best things to say about her and how much they appreciate her and her consistently giving great care to their loved ones. Olivia helped me feel comfortable and confident in my new role, showing me by example.
