Our family experienced some of the most traumatic days of our lives with our dad/husband. During this time, we were beyond fortunate enough to have met Olivia Fowler, RN, and experienced her unending dedication, professionalism, and care. When we Googled the word nurse, the following words spoke to us: caring, compassionate, empathetic, resilient, committed, and humorous. When we talk about Olivia, these same words resonate in our minds and hearts. Olivia was more than a nurse over the 5 days we shared; she meticulously cared for our dad/husband. The way in which she spoke to and cared for Dad gave each one of us a sense of security, especially since they were on the night shift when it was our mom who stayed the night. Olivia seamlessly filled a void for our mom in our absence, which allowed my sister and I to go home and get some rest. Dad was never awake during his time at Carroll but that never stopped Olivia from greeting him every time she entered, patiently telling him what she was doing and treating him like he was her own family member.

What stood out the most to us was Olivia's caring nature with M, G's newly certified CNA/GNA 17-year-old granddaughter. Olivia took M under her wing and involved M in every step of her Pop's care. Watching Olivia's patient and teaching manner with M made our hearts burst and M was given an experience utilizing her skills that no other family member had. I know that night will be one memory M will never forget. Olivia also very quickly became "family" to us. She not only met the many needs of G, but she also met the needs of the family that surrounded him around the clock. Olivia offered words and hugs as our hearts were breaking minute by minute and offered love, support, and truly compassionate care to our entire family. Although our family struggled greatly to understand why God had allowed this to happen to our dad/husband, we were more than certain God knew exactly why Olivia was scheduled to work that week. It is with the utmost respect that we feel that Olivia Fowler deserves to be recognized as a DAISY Nurse.
