Every time I arrived, he would calmly walk me through Mom's most recent lab values, any changes in her vitals, how she handled dialysis, and so on. We also talked about life, about our kids and more. It was therapeutic and a level of human connection that I needed.
My Mom was transferred to Ochsner Acadia General for a higher level of care after having her gallbladder removed. She was suffering from acute pancreatitis, sepsis, and renal insufficiency. We knew it was an uphill battle and the prognosis was poor. Over the 2 weeks that Mom spent at Acadia General, we had incredible nurses caring for around the clock, but O'Neal was the one who spent the most time with Mom. He carried us through the hardest time of our lives. I always found myself praying each day that he was the one with Mom when I got there. He cared for the whole patient, including the rest of us, including her family and friends. Every time I arrived, he would calmly walk me through Mom's most recent lab values, any changes in her vitals, how she handled dialysis, and so on. We also talked about life, about our kids and more. It was therapeutic and a level of human connection that I needed. He reminded me that I could call any time, day or night, to check on her. I felt so helpless, the only thing I could do was ask questions and lots of them. I wanted to advocate for Mom in whatever way I could. He answered every last question. On the days when I cried and didn't want to leave her, he reminded me she would never be alone and that they were there for her, caring for her needs. His fatherly wisdom kicked in with me as well. He could see my exhaustion and often reminded me to take care of myself. O'Neal is one of a kind and we were so blessed to cross paths with him during the hardest, most heartbreaking period of our lives. God's plans were greater than ours for Mom, she passed away with us by her side on Saturday, but I will never forget O'Neal and how he cared for her (and Us).
