I had the pleasure to visit with the family of D on the day of her passing. On this day the parents of D shared their experience with Cone Health over the past 6 years. D had spent time in each of our ICUs with complications from her physical delays. As they shared stories of these admissions, there was one constant name of support they continue to share and that was Pete Babcock. D's mother cried as she shared the importance of Pete's relationship with their family. She praised his bedside manner and the comfort he has provided them through D's course of care in the good times and bad. The discussion about quality of life, tracheostomy and the follow up calls to their home. All landed well because of the way Pete developed a relationship with them. On this admission, I mentioned D did not discharge home this time but on-admission for the last time at Cone Health it was Pete who met D and her parents in the ED to provide them with support to take D into our care once more. Pete arrived to the ED at night, a shift D's parents knew he did not work and knew the only reason he was there was because of the relationship he built with D over the past six years. D's parents spoke about Pete's compassion at every opportunity. Pete impacts many patients and team members this way and with my 12 years working with him, I could not let this opportunity to celebrate him pass by.
