She undertakes weekly family planning and ANC clinics across the communities through a door-to-door service. I sometimes wonder where she finds her courage. She has a love for duty and compassion as a midwife. She makes all her clients feel like they are her relatives.
Philo happens to be the only midwife who serves close to 23 communities and other surrounding smaller hamlets both inland and on the islands around Donkorkrom, in the Eastern Region of Ghana.
Regardless of the difficult terrain and the risk involved in traveling the islands, she does weekly outreach services to hard-to-reach communities and provides maternal care and support to women in deprived communities.
Her reassuring, kind presence and extraordinary humane approach have served women in deprived communities for the past 5 years. As a Midwife trained in the Urban area of Ghana, she did not decline her posting and agreed to work in the deprived conditions and put in effortless service and compassionate support for women and young girls within these areas.
As part of her nomination story, a nominator had this to say about her, “I can say that it takes compassion and dedication for anyone to be doing what this midwife keeps doing in these areas. Through her tireless efforts, she offers sex education to young teenage girls and the dangers of teenage pregnancy, which used to be rampant on the island before she came here. She has designed educational materials for this purpose.
She provides them with sanitary pads with the aid of some chiefs within the area. She undertakes weekly family planning and ANC clinics across the communities through a door-to-door service. I sometimes wonder where she finds her courage. She has a love for duty and compassion as a midwife. She makes all her clients feel like they are her relatives.”
There are a lot of testimonies that can be heard on the lips of the clients in these areas. Since her arrival, teenage pregnancies in the area have decreased, and most young girls are now focused on their education. Women have also stopped resorting to illegal abortions and are keeping their pregnancies to term.
She is always on hand to attend to any call for delivery whenever she is called. In his final remark, the nominator concluded with the following words, “This midwife has the heart of an Angel sent to help our deprived communities.”
