Piper was further amazing as a practice supervisor and was so eager to help me learn and navigate my way through the ward.
I worked alongside Piper for a few shifts; she was amazing with all patients and their families and very reassuring. There was a very young, poorly patient who relied on Airvo. This patient was rarely seen as a child but, instead, a patient where all medical needs were met, and the patient was well looked after, but there was no play therapy or play intervention with this child due to them being so small with a severe brain injury.
Piper went above and beyond, and alongside the play team, she would ensure the patient had sensory items such as fiber optic cables and projectors as well as a ward iPad so that the patient and their parent were still able to have a more usual day that the child may have had if they were not unwell and in hospital for a period of months. The patient responded very well to this and enjoyed the lights and sounds the iPad displayed. The mother seemed happier and more comfortable and sang her praises of Piper.
Piper further spoke to the patient every time she entered his room despite the patient only being a few months old. Piper would go above and beyond for their mother when she was asleep, would be on time with all medications, and would be at every call bell within a matter of seconds. Piper was further amazing as a practice supervisor and was so eager to help me learn and navigate my way through the ward. I felt listened to when I had concerns, and action was taken appropriately. Piper maintained two high-needs patients and ensured all charts were filled correctly, observations were complete, and medicines were given. She explained queries and concerns to both patients' parents and was so helpful with other patient needs and any help other staff required.
Piper is incredibly inspirational, and I hope one day I can be a nurse like Piper. Piper is always a friendly face and is willing to help everyone despite her own caseload for the day. Piper is an absolute angel in disguise and a huge credit to Riverbank Ward.
