Polly is the quintessential example of an OR Nurse. On Tuesday, Dr. S posted a Class I emergency for a 17-week pregnant woman with Placentae Abruptio in the early stages of DIC. Even though Polly's shift did not start until 0700, when asked if she could help, she swept into action comforting the patient while going under anesthesia. A hysterotomy was performed and the baby was removed. Although post mortem care of an infant is protocol in Labor & Delivery, the Operating Room rarely encounters this duty. Staff was assigned to relieve Polly but instead of leaving, she stayed and lovingly cleaned and dressed the baby in the knitted blanket and cap provided by the volunteers. She took pictures, measurements and completed the memory box for the parents. After the procedure, she sought out the patient's husband and provided him with an update concerning his wife. Watching Polly with this family at their most vulnerable time brought tears to my eyes.
This show of compassion and commitment to those both young and old is no surprise to those of us who work with Polly. She goes above and beyond on a daily basis in her role as a service line coordinator. The staff looks up to Polly as she exudes confidence and knowledge. More times than not, Polly exceeds the Inova six milestones. She is GREAT! She is a communicator! She is a team player! Her patient's ALWAYS come first! She is a champion for change! And lastly, she owns every situation good or bad! Polly is an asset to Inova Alexandria Hospital, and it is both a pleasure and honor working with her.
