As the COVID-19 pandemic evolved, it became clear that a plan needed to be created to provide additional support to care to patients who were affected by this novel virus. As part of the plan, to provide care to our critically ill patients, the entire PACU team was asked to revise their work schedule since their critical care skills and expertise would be needed in the critical care department to provide much-needed patient care. As a leader, I can say this was a very challenging time. I recall meeting with the PACU Nurses and discussing with them an orientation plan and the need to change their schedule to accommodate working in critical care. You might think this is not a huge ask. However, the PACU schedule is Monday through Friday with call coverage after hours. Now the PACU Nurses were being asked to change their schedules to 12-hour shifts either days or nights to include weekends and holidays and essentially rearrange their life. The Nurses accepted this ask with grace and poise showing the utmost professionalism at all times. At no time did anyone refuse or push back. I recall having a feeling of amazing respect for this team in this moment and throughout the entire COVID-19 crisis. The team consisted of the following Registered Nurses:
This team by far exemplifies the mission and values of LVHN. Furthermore, this team served and continues to serve as role models of collaboration and teamwork to all colleagues. They have truly made a difference in the lives of patients, families, colleagues, and the community during the COVID-19 crisis.
