Recently, UofL Hospital admitted a patient following a motor vehicle collision that involved the patient and her children. Two of the patient's children were admitted to the ICU at Children's Hospital down the street. The patient had multiple fractures but was stable on one of UofL's step down units.
During her stay, a physician from Children's Hospital came to speak with her regarding the poor prognosis of one of her children. Upon notification of the situation, the staff at both Children's and UofL Hospital stepped into action to meet the patient's very real need to be with her child. The team included nurses, nursing aides, chaplains, the house supervisor, APRNs, case managers, and a local ambulance service.
Through collaboration and coordination, the team was able to have the patient transported to Children's Hospital on multiple occasions, accompanied by a nurse for monitoring, to visit with her child, all costs covered by the hospital. She was able to participate in decision making, be present when the child was pronounced, and ultimately was present for the honor walk as the child was transported to the OR for organ donation.
Today we want to honor the team that came together to provide exceptional care to this patient:
Lea Ann Sherrell, 7S RN: Identified the patient's need and initiated discussions with care coordination and leadership to meet the patient's needs
Breonna Zinninger, 7S PCA: Identified the patient's need and initiated discussions with care coordination and leadership to meet the patient's needs
Amanda Culler, MERIT RN: Came in on a day off to escort the patient during a trip to Children's Hospital
Hailey Smith, Burn CRN: Facilitated a room and care for the patient that allowed her and family time to process the situation and grieve
Teri O'Bryan, House Supervisor: Coordinated with staff and leadership to facilitate the visits to Children's Hospital
Kimberly Broughton-Miller, Trauma 2 APRN: Facilitated care orders to allow patient to go offsite to Children's Hospital
Michelle Frisbie, Trauma 2 APRN: Facilitated care orders to allow patient to go offsite to Children's Hospital
Jessica Deis, Float RN: Came in on two days off to escort the patient during trips to Children's Hospital
Bethanie Kotelnicki, Float RN: Escorted the patient during a trip to Children's Hospital
Kirt Hodges, Chaplain: Supported the patient and family during the difficult time of prognosis, death, organ donation and grief
Elaine Johnson, RN Case Manager: Coordinated transport to and from Children's Hospital
Tiffany Smith, RN Case Manager: Coordinated transport to and from Children's Hospital
