I only had to make eye contact or slightly raise my hand, and she was checking to see what I needed.
I was scheduled for and had gastric sleeve surgery. My surgery went well and was completed sooner than the expected time. Even though I was one of the first patients out of surgery that morning, I was one of the last ones to get a room that day. As I was to stay overnight, my mom wasn’t called back to recovery. Rachel was very aware of me and my needs. I only had to make eye contact or slightly raise my hand, and she was checking to see what I needed. Even if she walked past me, she was checking on me to see how I was feeling. She made sure I was sipping, sucking and walking every hour. She set up 4 medicine cups of water for me each hour and documented my intake on my sheet. She contacted my mother to let her know how I was doing and even got my phone from my mom, so I could also contact my mother. Rachel was polite and had a smile throughout our whole contact - beginning to end, which I’m sure was close to the end of her shift. She never let me feel like I was an inconvenience. That was the first time I’d been in a recovery room without a family member or friend with me. Rachel made an uncomfortable situation for me comfortable, and I felt safe knowing she was aware of me and my needs. She kept my mother informed also, which was a relief for Mom.
