As soon as Rachelle Kitchen stepped into my delivery suite, I knew I was in safe hands. It was clear that she had not only read my extensive birth plan but respected it. I felt heard and supported in my most vulnerable moments. Her bedside manner was exceptional. During my labour, I experienced numerous panic attacks; at one point, I sobbed, “I think I’m doing it wrong.” Rachelle stood by my side and used a combination of humor, breathing techniques, and reassurance to support me to believe in myself again. I felt empowered.

During what could have been an incredibly distressing moment, Rachelle professionally guided me through what to expect. As I was taken for an emergency C-section, I felt relaxed and unafraid. Rachelle remained by my side, even though it was finally time for her break, she did not abandon me and that’s one act I am truly grateful for. There can be a lot of negative talk regarding hospital births, and honestly, it was something I was nervous about. From the get-go, I had planned, researched, and prepared for a homebirth. Like any mother-to-be, I wanted the best start for my child. 

Although things did not go according to my plan, my birth story is a positive one because of the love and care I received from Rachelle. She advocated for me every step of the way, ensuring my baby received golden time and delayed cord clamping, I still felt some essence of control. Thank you.
