When Rebecca realized the clothing he arrived in was dirty, she took it upon herself to take the clothes home with her and return them clean.
We recently had a patient who was in need of surgery. Prior to his admission, he was homeless, living in his car. The patient was nervous and scared, often randomly calling out to see if staff was nearby. His room was close to the nurses’ station and the blinds were kept open to allow him to see the nurses as they went to other rooms and charted at the nurses’ station. One of his caregivers, Rebecca Childs, was especially attentive to him. When she realized the clothing he arrived in was dirty, she took it upon herself to take the clothes home with her and return them clean. While to some this may have been a small gesture, to the staff of PCU and to the patient it was much more. It was an act of kindness for an individual who may or may not see much kindness. Rebecca demonstrated for us two of our core values: Dignity and Compassion. It is a blessing to work with Rebecca.
