My 17-month old son was cared for by Rebecca many times in our 151 day stay at Children's Hospital. She was amazing with our son, D. She treated us like she would want her family to be treated. We were drawn to her positive, friendly, and honest personality. When we first had Rebecca as a nurse, we were not sure if we should leave the hospital because of his condition. My husband asked her and said we needed the truth. She promised us D was stable enough for us to leave and would let us know if there were any issues. We appreciated her honesty and we knew we could trust her. That provided us comfort as we left D's side.
Another experience I will always remember is how she took her time and included D in his cares. He was paralyzed but Rebecca found ways to include him giving his medicine. She always came in each morning and talked with him. When it was time to give his medicine, she took the time to explain each medicine. She even came up with a song and helped him, "Shake, shake, shake your clonidine." Then, she connected the medicine syringe to the g-tube and she helped him push it into his g-tube. I remember his eyes watching her and I knew he really enjoyed the attention and being able to participate in his own care. D loved to watch everything around him so this was right up his alley. He watched other nurses give medicines and you could see he wanted to help like he did with Rebecca. As a mom, seeing someone love my child that much to take the extra time to include him made me feel so blessed to have Rebecca as our nurse.
Finally, on the night that D passed away, Rebecca stayed after her shift. She waited for us outside our room allowing us time to be with him. She assisted with his final bath and was there for my husband and me. She helped us pack up our room and walked us out to the car. We felt she went above and beyond her normal responsibilities and it truly touched our hearts in a way we will never forget.
We truly believe Rebecca is a DAISY Nurse.
