We have a patient that has been in our unit for 400+ days. He is an active 5-year-old waiting on a heart transplant. He loves ambulances and fire trucks and has several toy ambulances and fire trucks to play with.
Renea Crapse, one of our unit charge nurses, wanted to do something special for this little guy. He has been brave with weekly procedures and has been doing a good job with potty training. She spent several days on the phone with ShandsCair Dispatch to organize one of the ShandsCair trucks to come to the north tower Pediatric ED circle for this patient. The morning of the visit, the patient's bedside nurse let him know of his special surprise. He was so excited during his "field trip" and let all of the nurses know what he got to see when he came back on the unit.
Renea has been in our unit for many years and is a valuable team member. Her compassion for our patients and their needs shines through her actions every day. This is just one example of how she impacts the lives of our pediatric patients.
