I recently underwent a lumbar puncture at Christiana Hospital. By the following day, I was almost completely incapacitated by a migraine caused by the procedure. I went to the ER and was thankfully assigned Rennae as my nurse. I was in pain, distressed, and afraid. The treatment I needed would have involved another needle in my spine, and I was too afraid to have it done. While I was making my decision, Rennae held my hand and offered support and encouragement. When I ultimately decided against it, Rennae supported me. She found a moment for just the two of us in the room to tell me she understood my hesitation and fear and respected my decision. She ensured I understood the importance of overcoming my fear and coming back to receive treatment if my symptoms didn’t improve. I am still on the mend, but I feel it is important that Rennae be recognized for her compassion and high level of patient care she provided me that night. I wasn’t in a position to thank her properly then, but I hope she knows how much her words meant to me. She made me feel understood, respected, and empowered to make my own decisions in a way that many medical providers can’t manage. Thank you!
