Dad stated that he felt really supported by Rick in the absence of his family.
Our dad was hospitalized on the 3rd-floor cardiology step-down unit at Austin Seton Hospital. During this time, Richard "Rick" Bibeau was his nurse for most morning and evening shifts. Rick's calm demeanor and kindness toward our dad were welcomed. He was always on top of everything my dad needed, showing up or asking if he needed something at the right time.
Rick quickly recognized that there was a patient who had been ill very little in his life and was scared of what was happening now. Dad had also had some previous doctors who had changed certain meds and did so with disastrous results. And now those doctors wanted to change these same meds. He became very fearful and agitated, and he felt like the providers were not listening to him. Rick stepped in and explained the concerns with the new meds and became an advocate for our dad. Dad stated that he felt really supported by Rick in the absence of his family. He said usually the nurse sided with the doctors, but Rick acted as my dad's advocate. Because of Rick's actions, the medication issue was resolved, and my dad felt satisfied and supported.
Much of my dad's hospitalization and potential outcomes were very anxiety-causing for our dad. And our dad said he felt well cared for when Rick was there. He and our family felt like we could always get an answer to our questions about our dad's care. Rick was always willing to reach out to the providers to get answers instead of giving us non-answers-- like, realistically, when would the echo be done, and what could my dad expect? Rick explained to our dad (and to us) all activities, what our dad was likely to encounter, any meds he might be given for any test, and what might happen next. He was realistic, forthcoming, and kind with every interaction with our dad and family!
Rick's compassionate care helped my dad relax and focus more on resting and recovering. He is a gem and an amazing asset to Austin Seton Hospital and the 3rd-floor Cardiology unit. We are so fortunate that my dad had Rick for most of his stay at Seaton. Thank you, Rick, from the bottom of our hearts!
