Roisin went above and beyond for this patient, demonstrating true empathy and compassion for the patient; she worked longer hours on the day of her surgery to ensure her needs were met and the journey was as smooth as it could be for the patient.
I was really impressed with the lengths Roisin went to supporting a recent patient through her surgery. The patient was anxious regarding her admission. She is registered deaf from birth and her current condition has affected her vision, she lives alone. Roisin was focussed on the patient experience from the start, she worked with other clinical areas to support the patient through her surgery and planned admission ensuring that everyone was aware of her needs, measures were taken to implement a patient centred approach for her particular needs. This involved organisation of BSL interpreter, to support the patient in pre-assessment and on admission to the ward, communication with CT/ Anaesthetist to facilitate the patient's friend to be present to assist in communicating with sign language when the interpreter was not present in the anaesthetic and recovery room once surgery was completed. Liaising with the ward to secure a side room on admission so the friend can stay to help with the communication needs of the patient and finally, Roisin herself meeting the patient on the ward on admission, going to surgery with the patient to reassure her and meeting the patient in recovery with her friend to support communication needs of the patient post-procedure. She was able to explain things to the friend who communicated this to the patient. The patient and her friend felt very well supported. Roisin then went back to the ward to ensure everything was in order prior to the patient leaving recovery and to organise open visiting for the friend during the patient's stay. Roisin went above and beyond for this patient, demonstrating true empathy and compassion for the patient; she worked longer hours on the day of her surgery to ensure her needs were met and the journey was as smooth as it could be for the patient. Her actions had a direct impact on the experience for the patient, providing reassurance and a safe place; it also removed the anxiety and worry she had around being in a strange environment with loss of hearing and limited vision.
