It was clear to us that he was a fantastic role model and coach to his team, and he felt great reward for their success, growth, and development.
On behalf of the senior management team, we would like to nominate Rommel De Peralta, Ward Manager for 6A for a DAISY Award. We visited the ward during the Trust’s Positive Leadership Walkround and had the pleasure of talking to Rommel and some members of his team on 6A.
What really shone through was his leadership and the support and encouragement he offered to his team. He was able to talk to us about the positives as well as the challenges they faced as a team and the ways in which they managed them and put forward ideas to make improvements. For example, recently, they had been caring for a patient who presented with challenging behavior, including being physically aggressive toward staff. He was able to share with us how the team worked together to manage this patient and care for each other. Telling us of how the team checked in with each other throughout the shift, made time to debrief and talk about their experience, rotated staff allocations on the ward to offer staff respite during shifts and shared how he felt the team was brilliant at generally supporting each other and included the support they received from the senior nursing team.
We felt that this example demonstrated strong leadership, as it was clear that the situation had been escalated, he was a strong advocate for his team and ensured they received the support necessary to manage this patient appropriately and continuing to keep his staff safe.
Rommel was extremely passionate and proud of his nursing team. He went out of his way to tell us about all the things they do well. He proudly shared with us a board that showcased staff success stories, including new promotions. It was clear to us that he was a fantastic role model and coach to his team, and he felt great reward for their success, growth, and development.
Whilst visiting we managed to speak to some of the renal team who shared how well the team worked together. Explaining that, the staff were very competent in their roles and would talk openly about treatment options for their patients, ensuring they were receiving the very best care. Again, we felt this was another example of how Rommel guided the team; his role modeling had clearly set the standard he expected from his team, and we felt this was so important when getting the basics right. We would like to thank Rommel for his commitment to the Trust and say how proud we are to have him as part of team ENHT.
