We were discharging a patient who had an Aspira drain that needed to be emptied prior to the patient being discharged. The patient had the materials to do this at home, however, was not comfortable doing it by herself yet and the staff was unfamiliar with this type of drain. VNA was unable to visit the patient [for three days].
Rose from Radiology was contacted by the nursing supervisor on her day off for guidance. Rose was familiar with this patient and suggested we give the patient her phone number. She said the patient could call her when she got home, and she would go over to the patient's house to assist her. We were grateful that Rose was willing to help on her Saturday off, so the patient's discharge wasn't put on hold.
