Throughout all of this, Roxanne’s confidence, positivity, and empathy felt like an anchor to me.
What started as a routine doctor's appointment led to us at the Riley Children’s Hospital emergency room. After a scary few days where my 12 month old was getting X-rays, CT scans, and a bronchoscopy, I had the scariest moment of my life when my daughter went into anaphylactic shock. I was standing there crying with my husband brooding on our circumstance and awful luck. Our daughter had aspirated food, was positive for pneumonia, and positive for croup. All these things were fighting against her to breathe, and then we find out she’s deathly allergic to penicillins. I’m sure you’re wondering, where does Roxanne come in?

Throughout all of this, Roxanne’s confidence, positivity, and empathy felt like an anchor to me. I could feel my mindset shift and my gratitude rise when Roxanne and the doctor told us that there was no better place to find out our daughter was deathly allergic to something than in the middle of Riley Hospital, surrounded by a capable team of medical professionals. And as I mentioned earlier, my daughter was positive for pneumonia, so I would have been prescribed amoxicillin and given it to her at home. I feel a profound sense of thankfulness that we came to Riley, listened to all the tests they wanted to run, and saved both my daughter and myself from a scary situation at home.

Roxanne was so patient with us and told us we could ask questions as many times as we wanted because in the middle of something like that, sometimes it takes four to five times for something to sink in. She even offered to fetch the chaplain when my crying mother-in-law asked if there was something she could give to the adults as she gave my daughter Benadryl for the allergic reaction. Roxanne was so confident in every decision the team made that it put me at ease. When my daughter continued to get better throughout the day, Roxanne heard us say my daughter was probably getting hungry and thirsty and immediately said she would see about getting some water. It is a comfort to know that when my children need medical care I don’t just choose Riley because of proximity, but because it really is the best hospital. Thank you, Roxanne for caring so well for my H!
