Ruka Lama has worked on the unit for 2.5 years. She came to the unit enthusiastic and willing to learn. She is a humble individual willing to do for her patients, their families and co-workers all that's within her ability. She gives to charitable organizations here in the
states and abroad. She embraces the ICARE values. She has been recognized numerous times by visitors to our unit and the patients in the Customer Service Excellence Comment cards and in personal cards from individual patients and families. Some of the cards that were sent to her she shared with me because she was so appreciative and not believing that someone would be so thankful to her for the care she delivered.

A card was given to her from a CAPSTONE student who appreciated that she precepted her. She mentioned that she learned tips and tricks about the working environment in a real hospital setting vs the classroom. Because Ruka was open and shared her experiences, the student was reassured that the imposter syndrome was okay when following her. She was encouraged to believe that she deserved to be here, that she was not a fake, and that she was smart enough. A family appreciated her kindness and hospitality in caring for their father, who was bleeding. She helped the family to understand and navigate the complicated discharge process. They spoke with the social worker but did not understand all that was communicated. The family appreciated her thoughtfulness and said she was their favorite nurse while they were here. Another family appreciated that she was focused on preventing bedsores for their mother by turning her regularly and explaining to them why she was turning frequently. They expressed their appreciation that she sat their mom upright to prevent aspiration and choking. She also gave their mom a back massage while she was sitting on the side of the bed. They appreciated her kindness and that she involved the family in their mom's care. They felt she communicated all meds and procedures before being given or before being done. Under RN care, their mom was comfortable, and pain was addressed expeditiously. The family was impressed with the quality of care, empathy, and out-of-the-box solutions to all problems.
