I found his open, warm, caring, and patient manner spiritually uplifting and emotionally comforting.
I want to recognize Registered Nurse Sal Abrams. After my emergency department intake, RN Abrams welcomed me to the 3rd floor room where he was on duty.
"We are here to give you the best medical care we can," he said as he settled me into bed. Among the services he said the hospital offered were non-denominational chaplains to provide spiritual and emotional support should I or my family members need or want to talk to someone.
Little did he know that I found his open, warm, caring, and patient manner spiritually uplifting and emotionally comforting. In addition to Sal's excellent nursing care, his seamless and efficient communication with my doctor resulted in changing the clear liquids only diet on the ED transfer order to solid foods just minutes before Food Services closed for the day so that I was able to eat after having nothing since the previous day. He also explained why I had two separate injection sites to administer various transfusions and medications and described the nature of the medications and how they worked.
Sal was on duty the following day and continued to explain what was being done and why, which allayed any concerns I might have had about the treatment and care that was being provided. He also stayed in touch with the doctors who were attending to me and kept me informed to the extent possible, which made me feel comfortable and less anxious about my condition and plans while hospitalized and after my discharge.
Sal Abrams is an excellent example of a highly skilled and caring nurse. I believe he is exceptionally deserving of the DAISY Award.
