My family and I first met Sama upon my mother's ICU admission after surviving a Code Blue in the ER. Since the minute my mother arrived, Sama treated my mother like her own. She was very caring, empathic, and attentive to her every need. Being intubated, she took the time to read her body language and try to communicate with her to keep her as comfortable as possible. Her knowledge of her condition was always updated and accurate. She explained the procedures to us in layman's language and, more importantly, took the time to explain the procedures (over and over) and conditions to both the family and, more importantly, my mother. She was such a breath of fresh air and positivity, and we hit the gold mine in a terrible situation by ending up on her floor. She not only treated my family and my mother with great care, but I was able to observe her helping other patients with the same utmost concern and detailed care. Sama exemplifies the definition of a nurse, both the noun and the verb. We are grateful and blessed to have had her assigned to care for my mother. Her own personal situation earlier in life that forced her to give critical care to her infant son and motivated her to become a nurse allowed her to exude empathy and compassion very naturally. Sama also skillfully navigated the needs of the patient and the "demands" of the family in doing the right thing for my mother. These character traits allowed her to create extensive trust with our family, and we made us look forward to seeing her each day. Sama is very worthy of DAISY recognition and we thank her with all our hearts regardless of any outward awards she might receive. Thank you, Sama!
