He put his trust in life decisions in her hands and said yes, go ahead and remove it. It was heartbreaking, but having Samantha treat D so respectfully and empathetically, allowing it to be his decision, made it easier for us as a family.
We didn’t know Samantha long before my husband D's death, but she came to her home to care for us and showed extraordinary friendship, compassion, empathy, knowledge, and love during the time that she was our Hospice nurse. She was a calming, caring source of information and love for her family. We could never have fully expressed our gratefulness to her for her wonderful, respectful care of D and our family. Samantha came to her home and proceeded to prepare multiple medications that D would need to ease his pain and anxiety. She was very knowledgeable, competent, and empathetic in teaching me how to administer these medications and to be aware of when and how often D would need them. It was very overwhelming when she put me at ease, reassuring me that I could do what was needed and that I could call any time of the day or night for help, questions, or assurances. Samantha came to realize that the BiPap machine D used was extending his breathing ability and ultimately his life. She conferred with physicians and respectfully shared this difficult situation with us and the recommendation that the BiPap machine be removed. D was still able to make decisions, and it was very important to Samantha that she discussed this with him and made sure it was his decision to stop using the machine. She held D's hand and looked into his eyes and asked if he wanted to stop using the BiPap. He put his trust in life decisions in her hands and said yes, go ahead and remove it. It was heartbreaking, but having Samantha treat D so respectfully and empathetically, allowing it to be his decision, made it easier for us as a family. No one wanted D to suffer any longer, especially Samantha. She became a friend to our family. She came to D's memorial service and has kept in contact since his passing. She has very often tracked in on me to see how we're doing and if there's anything she or Hospice can do to help continue the loving care we received. I appreciate her more than I can express, and I am so grateful that she continues on the lifetime journey she began with us when she so compassionately assisted D to pass with dignity from this earth. She's a wonderful nurse who provided the greatest care to our family when we needed it most. Thank you so much, Samantha!
