Sam said, “Good now I am happy because you look comfortable and that makes me happy.”
“What can I do for you?” She said as she walks into every one of her patient’s rooms. Samantha walked in the room across from me, her name is P and she says to her “What can I do for you today?” The woman at this time is pretty much nonverbal and needs help with all ADLs. Sam just started talking to her in an uplifting mood and said: “we are going to make you comfortable today because you look uncomfortable P, are you uncomfortable P?” P must have nodded because she said, “We are going to make you comfortable.” She proceeds to help P get comfortable, they tried all different positions until finally P said “I am comfortable” (P is not a small woman.) Sam said, “Good now I am happy because you look comfortable and that makes me happy,” she said with a sigh. Sam continued in the room crushing her pills, talking away to her. P must have given her some cues she was listening because Sam would say “You are listening to me.” It brought tears to my eyes. When she was all done, she did spend some time with her. Before she walked, she turned to P and said “Is there anything else I can do for you?” P must have nodded no because Sam said I’ll be back to check on you. Sam continued down the hall to all of her rooms, walked in the room, and with a real bubbly voice “What can I do for…” Those few words meant a lot to me and I can’t help but think to a few others that day!!!
