In the slight calm of being transferred to the 4 East wing after the chaos of several days in the ICU, it was discovered that my mother-in-law's DOB was incorrectly copied during one of the countless inputting or transfers of information, off by just one number. However, Nurse Sandra Burton quickly recognized this and its critical importance. My mother-in-law was brought to your hospital purely by luck after being pulled from an Amtrak train in full DKA and having a heart attack. We were very far from our home in NYC, and everything was unfamiliar. Over 600 miles from any of her doctors, pharmacies, and hospitals she had previously been through. As DOB is such an important component of a patient's ID, this small error would have made it incredibly difficult to get access to her past records, including her long list of prescriptions and the Medical ID and information on the previously implanted stents currently in her heart and potentially causing issue. While catching this error after many others missed it is important enough for special recognition, Sandra's overall attention, efficiency, and truly felt compassion for both mom and dad made her even more deserving. My father-in-law had been a hospital administrator in various NYC hospitals for over 36 years and continually expressed his admiration for all the nurses, doctors, and staff. But he also recognized Sandra as one of the more exceptional highlights.
