This occurred off duty as a Caregiver and on-duty as a new mom. I delivered our twins at 24 weeks gestation. Both babies were less than 2 pounds, and my husband and I had no idea what the next months had in store for us. We met Sara on our third day and immediately found a comfort in her that we so desperately needed through the chaos in our new lives. We had just received devastating news and we decided to ask her to "follow" Claire. She would continue to follow our Claire for the entire RNICU stay. How do we possibly begin to thank this woman who not only cared for our child(ren) as her own but for caring for my husband and I as well during our 4+month stay? Sara opened her heart to the four of us without hesitation. Only after a few days it felt like we had known her for years. Sara quickly became a part of our family and will forever hold a special place in our hearts. She was with us through every step of our journey: the good times as well as the bad. She held me as I cried when we lost our son and then again as I tried to navigate the stresses and life of a NICU mom with our daughter. She encouraged me to never give up hope as well as to continue pumping breast milk. I attribute a big part of my 8 months of pumping to her! She celebrated each of our daughter's milestones and achievements with us. Somehow, Sara found a way to make us smile every day. I will forever be grateful for the way she helped me find my voice.
