To me, the most difficult and impressive part of this whole process was Sara’s ability to not only manage this patient’s complex ICU needs but to completely dedicate herself to caring for the family during some of the worst days of their life.
I am nominating Sarah Manjikian for a DAISY Award for the overwhelming compassion and dedication she showed to a young dying patient in the burn ICU unit. Sara is a coworker of mine and a newer nurse. I cannot stop thinking about how proud I was to stand alongside her as a nurse during this particularly difficult time. The patient was a young gentleman who was around Sara’s age and died after a tragic accident. She worked many long days in a row to help stabilize and optimize this patient so that he could be able to donate his organs to people in need, including a kidney to the patient’s uncle. To me, the most difficult and impressive part of this whole process was Sara’s ability to not only manage this patient’s complex ICU needs but to completely dedicate herself to caring for the family during some of the worst days of their life. I will never forget how this family looked at Sara and the long, caring hugs she gave them despite tending to upwards of 10 IV drips and several other machines. Sara displayed nursing in its truest form. When the patient went to the OR to donate organs, I truly believe Sara had an immensely large role in this. Her dedication and compassion helped both the patient and grieving parents overcome this incredibly difficult time. I am proud of Sara and her compassion as a bedside ICU Nurse.
