A teacher contacted the Eagle River Center regarding a possible reaction to the COVID-19 vaccine she had received at an outside facility. The patient was initially referred to the ER or UC by the appointment staff as she was not an established patient of the lone provider in the small center. The patient then reached out to the provider via personal cell phone as they know each other from the community. The provider spoke with the patient and informed Sarah, the RN working that day, that the patient would be coming in and that she would fit her in whenever she presented. Upon arrival, Sarah got the patient in a room and did a brief assessment. She then gave a report to the provider who went into the room for her assessment and proceeded to order medication for the patient to be given while in the clinic. The patient was extremely nervous and anxious throughout the visit due to the unknowns of the reaction. Sarah not only provided excellent care in terms of the medication administration but also took the extra time to sit with the patient throughout the visit. The patient was so appreciative of the care received and kindness shown that day that she asked Sarah to assist her in scheduling appointments with the provider for herself, her husband, and her two children. To add to that management received a great compliment regarding Sarah from a coworker on their annual performance appraisal: "Sarah has floated to the department several times this past year and I always learn new and better ways to do things when she is here. I aim to make the people I work with feel how she makes me feel when she leaves; empowered and knowledgeable".
