She called her patient by name. She talked to him in pleasant tones and told him how much she cared about how he was doing.
The nominating family said this nurse paid attention to the small details, like keeping blankets up or down, providing extra blankets and pillows. This nurse helped order meals and made sure this patient moved and walked every day, even when they were busy. When the patient's loved one came into the room and they were in a chair, there were clean linens on their bed. This nurse explained the meds well and kept the patient aware of what they were taking. The nurse cleaned the room as they threw away old supplies and items throughout the day. The room always looked good.
This nurse was kind and thoughtful and had an attitude that shined. She made it seem like cleaning up after her patient was a privilege even though she was gowned and gloved and masked. She was gentle and always remembered to put on barrier creme and always wrote her name on the board. She called her patient by name. She talked to him in pleasant tones and told him how much she cared about how he was doing.
The patient’s loved one left every day feeling safe when this nurse was there. She answered all her questions willingly and in detail so she could get a plan of what was going on when she could not connect with the doctor. This nurse asked for help if she needed it and was upfront about what she was doing. At discharge, this nurse had everything nicely piled and ready to go. Discharge instructions were clear because the patient’s loved one asked lots of questions, and the nurse was okay with that. Whenever this loved one went to the desk and interrupted the nurse’s concentration, she never complained or gave her a dirty look.
The patient said she is one of the best nurses he has ever had, and his loved one agrees! Thank you, Sarah Bell, for shining so bright!
