The patient was walking the halls over the weekend and this is the story he shared:

There was an elderly female patient trying to leave the hospital with a Foley bag in her hand. A young nurse quietly and calmly approached the patient and began talking with her. Because of her patience and kindness, the elderly patient began walking with the young nurse and cooperatively returned to her room, even though it was obvious she was confused. It was that moment when he knew the nursing care on the floor was excellent! This nurse also took care of him. She knew what she was doing and he felt very confident in her nursing skills. When she went above and beyond by using kindness, patience, and therapeutic conversation, the patient perception of this nurse changed from that of a competent nurse to one that also really cares. Lesson from the above story: we are always being watched, so treat everyone the way you would want to be treated.

Another nomination
I could not agree more that Sarah Compton always shows our patients respect. She has a gift in her approach that puts people at ease. She advocates for the preservation of the patients dignity, safety and privacy. Sarah is one of the most compassionate, responsive nurses I have the pleasure of working with!

Additional nomination
Sarah is such a caring, genuine hard-working nurse. She gives her all and is super patient with the patients especially the elderly ones. She took the time to take a patient to another floor to visit his wife well after her shift had ended. You don’t see that level of caring and dedication these days. I feel she really deserves this award because everyone who has worked with her can give similar instances where she went above and beyond, it’s just her caregiver nature.

Additional nomination
Sarah admitted a patient whose wife was on another floor. He kept talking about seeing her, so Sarah stayed 45 minutes after work to bring the patient a wheelchair to see his wife. Sarah is a great nurse and always willing to help out anyone at anytime.

Letter written to the Sarah
We would like to thank you for the great care you gave our daughter while she was at Bethesda North on the day she died. Thank you for the phone call you made to me. I cannot tell you how much that call meant to me. To know you were with her when she died and she was not alone, and to know she went peacefully to heaven. The guilt of me not being there with her when she died has tormented me so. I hadn’t been gone long when she died. Your call has helped me more than you could know and I am so grateful to you. The world needs more nurses like you.
