Sarah has been an inspirer, a challenger, and a supporter of her patients. When tragedy hits, Sarah counts it as a blessing to hold the hands of the patient and the patient’s loved ones. She has touched the lives of so many throughout her career.
Sarah Hersey has had a distinguished career as a certified operating room nurse and as a nurse navigator at Wellstar West Georgia Medical Center. She has lived her professional career taking care of patients, their families, physicians, support staff and co-workers. It is our honor to recommend Sarah for the DAISY Lifetime Achievement Award.

Sarah began her nursing career over 40 years ago. Through her incredible journey, she has worked in many areas, with the last 20 years focused in the Operating Room and at the Cancer Center. It is a prerequisite of this award to have had a distinguished career – one that promoted a positive image of the profession, one that advocated for improved patient care, one that served as a role model and advocated for nursing practice and one that demonstrated and actively engaged in professional development for themselves and others. Sarah has met and exceeded these prerequisites.

Sarah has championed nursing and patient care throughout all of her professional career. One of Sarah’s team members stated, “Sarah often brings coffee to our patients in the waiting room. She is consistently happy providing support for patients and their families. She listens to her patients outside of their diagnosis and brings them gifts based on what she learns from them. She makes them feel like family instead of a patient with cancer. She has always made herself available at all times of the day and on weekends to ensure our patients receive quality care. She takes this even further by providing support for the team. She is always there providing a helping hand and is happy to help wherever and whenever needed.”

Another team member stated, “Sarah’s greatest achievement as a nurse navigator is helping patients not have to go through what she did with her own father’s diagnosis. She tries to bring joy and connect dots during a very dark and emotional time. She is truly a helper and is always there to provide a listening and empathetic ear. She loves her patients, and her patients love her.”

Sarah has been an inspirer, a challenger, and a supporter of her patients. When tragedy hits, Sarah counts it as a blessing to hold the hands of the patient and the patient’s loved ones. She has touched the lives of so many throughout her career. She has made so many special moments with her patients. She has also been a mentor to many junior nurses. Many view Sarah as not only a phenomenal nurse but a remarkable person. This award communicates the profound gratitude and meaningful recognition for all Sarah has done for our patients. She connects with a purpose to serve with compassion, care, and support. She is a Wellstar difference-maker. She honors every voice every time and always pursues excellence for every person, every time. Thank you, Sarah, for your service, your loyalty and commitment, and especially your joy in taking care of others.
