We recently had a young male patient who was critically injured in a Motor Vehicle Collision. He had severe internal as well as orthopedic injuries to overcome. While spending a month in the trauma ICU, he required a tracheostomy and appeared to be depressed from his prolonged critical illness.
Sarah Hodges is crafty and creative and saw an opportunity to make the patient smile. She discovered that they both shared enjoyment of comic books and action heroes. One day after caring for him for 12 hours, she went home and hand sewed not 1, but 3 different original "trach tie covers" made from fabric covered in cool comic book and superheroes. This was a small gesture but brought a big smile to the patients face. We hope he won't need the trach for long, but we know he'll be styling and showing off the new tie covers proudly for as long as it is needed.
