My first thought was, “Oh my God, I’m so glad you were here.” She took care of me when I couldn’t speak for myself and was smart enough and passionate enough to do it so well.
I cannot fully express the quality of care and compassion I have received on 3 North. All of the staff seem to genuinely love the ward, and that is reflected in everything they do. From the cleaning staff to the charge nurses, there is such a level of care here that cannot be described. I have nursed and also been a patient in 2 countries and this is honestly one of the most pleasant, well-run floors I have ever seen.

I remember Sarah from the first 4 hours and the last 4 hours of her shift. In the middle, I was seizing and post-ictal so I don’t remember much of that critical time. I wasn’t feeling well when Sarah came in as my night nurse. I instantly knew it was going to be a great night just from her knowledge, confidence, warmness, and compassion. Being a former nurse and my husband a physician, she appreciated my medical knowledge and spoke to me at the level I understood. She appeared very young and new but you would never know that from her level of expertise. If I ever had a health issue, she is the one person I would want advocating my care and apparently that came true this day.

Very quickly, I went from talking to instantly speechless. Sarah knew instantly something was wrong and called for extra help. She called my husband out of town and told him what was going on. He has a serious demeanor and an appreciation for the facts with no fluff. He was blown away by the call and has told me so many times that Sarah passed on a report that was better than most of the residents. He was extremely impressed with her knowledge and felt relieved that she was by my side. He is a bit of a perfectionist, and he was very comforted that I was on 3 North; he says it is the best ward he works with.

Over the next few hours, Sarah continued to advocate for me when I was not able, and when I awoke she was right by my side explaining what had happened and that I was ok. My first thought was, “Oh my God, I’m so glad you were here.” She took care of me when I couldn’t speak for myself and was smart enough and passionate enough to do it so well.

This is who I want for my nurse. This is who I want to care for my family members. She is the patient, kind, thoughtful, intelligent nurse we all want on our team.
