she did it with such calm, efficiency, and skill that I have little doubt that she saved that child's life.
It was late in the afternoon on a Sunday when the unthinkable happened. An arterial ECMO cannula in a carotid artery became dislodged. Instantly, the infant lost the cardiopulmonary support provided by the ECMO circuit and also began to exsanguinate. The ensuing medical response was robust, focused on providing ventilation and compressions to address the bradycardic arrest, which rapidly followed. Still, for most, the focus was on the baby, not the ECMO circuit. Blood was brought quickly to the bedside, and chest compressions continued, but with only a small PICC line for access, it was impossible to replace the lost volume at a rate fast enough to compensate for the large deficit and ongoing loss. But calmly and efficiently, ECMO Primer Sarah Mahon clamped the potential forward direction of flow in the ECMO circuit, accessed the drainage side of the circuit, and converted the large venous cannula from a blood drainage device to a rapid infusion line, allowing her to give volume and blood at the high rate necessary to resuscitate this infant whose life literally hung in the balance. While Sarah did nothing more than her job, nothing more than what she had been trained to do, she did it with such calm, efficiency, and skill that I have little doubt that she saved that child's life. In a situation where many might have frozen or been distracted by the baby's arrest, Ms Mahon thought and acted flawlessly, representing the best of who we are and strive to be. I am proud to call her my colleague.
