Saskia is compassionate in her work. She understands staff concerns on the unit and personally. She talks with staff and is able to resolve conflicts by individually speaking to them about their concerns and how to work with each other on the unit.
Saskia Deane, manager of WCT5, is an exceptional manager who provides the unit with professionalism and understanding in the managerial role. She started as a floor nurse and Assistant Manager then Manager of this unit with the first 2 years of being hired. I personally precepted her as an orient and noticed her qualities of nursing as exceptional. Saskia takes the role of manager very seriously and runs the unit well. Giving instructions from personally making sure “Hall Huddles” were completed by educating each hall with NA’s and nurses on how to complete and communicate during the huddles and her expectations. Reminding staff of their bedside reporting, hourly rounding, POWER Hour (to reduce falls) as we care for the veterans.
She is competent and knowledgeable of her role and shows by example. She understands the workflow process of the VA.
Works with the staff to keep them up-to-date with Monthly Staff meetings, new policies and fire alarm and severe weather (tornado) drills, TMS, CPR and unit in-services.

Welcomes anyone into her office as a Open-Door Policy to talk, listen and provides feedback which makes Saskia Deane an inspiration to anyone who knows her.
Compliments staff on the work the provided, personally and using TEAMS, emails so they enjoy a pat on the back for their work they provide for the veterans.
She also continues her education and prompts others to advance their careers in Nursing. She encourages staff members to join committees to better the unit.
Personally, she cares for veterans and even makes sure they are showered and clean (taking on a resident who gets upset/angry with others and is able to complete ADLs with a vet). Speaks to them on a 1:1 basis, educating and reminding them “Why they are at the VA and we’re working with them, so they have a better life in the future.”
Actively interacts with veterans in the community area, keeping veterans occupied by talking and taking time to have activities as they are sitting being monitored. She shows other staff what and that being on WCT5 Dementia ward takes a special individual, following the Montessori Values when working with staff and inpatient veterans.
Saskia advocates for the unit consistently: reviewing residents to be on unit, asking for more staff when needed due to behavioral or ratio of veteran to staff in community area to monitor veterans safely.
These are qualities of the managerial role she portrays on a daily basis and deserve recognition.
