My Mom was transported to Corvallis Good Samaritan Hospital via ambulance with what appeared to be a broken arm. However, once admitted to the hospital and upon further testing, it was discovered that she had a very aggressive cancer. After the cancer diagnosis, the hospitalist team recommended moving her to the Oncology wing to better care for her and her intense pain.
The move happened very quickly and was somewhat confusing for us to understand, however within minutes of her getting settled in, Sean came in and took complete control of the room and care of his patient. He first sat with her for what seemed like an hour just taking the time getting to know her, asking for her to tell him HER story, and listening with respect and concern. He then got to know the rest of us in the room and proceeded to assure us she was in a good place where they could give her the attention, care, compassion, and pain management she needed and deserved.
Although our time with Sean was short, really only 3-4 shifts, it was incredibly impactful. He was a delight to see every time he came into the room and was always so kind and genuine with my Mom. He never ventured too far and was always checking-in and managing her pain and comfort level! He made my Mom feel like she was his one and only priority even though there were many patients being cared for at the time. Sean really was a consummate professional, but he also showed us his human side; he just felt like family. We shared some laughs, some tears, and some fun stories with him which made a very difficult situation a little more light-hearted.
Once we arrived at the Hospice House, it became very clear to us that Sean had most certainly been a driving force and a strong advocate for getting my Mom admitted. We had numerous comments from the staff there that Sean is an amazing patient advocate and nurse and they always receive the best and most thorough notes from him when a patient is transferred. Not one of them had ever met Sean in person but knew what a good nurse he was by reputation.
We had so many great caretakers at Good Samaritan and the Hospice House, but Sean will forever be remembered by us as an amazing DAISY Nurse.
