Shallane and her team of nurses began decorating our room, wrapping gifts for our entire family, and brought in a special meal for us all to enjoy together.
In November of 2021 my husband and I welcomed our second child, B to the world. Our hearts were beyond full to welcome this new addition to our family. Unfortunately, soon after bringing B home from the hospital he and his brother came down with RSV. About a week after being diagnosed, and showing no signs of improvement my husband and I decided to take B into the Emergency Room to be examined. Here, the ER team hooked him up to monitors and decided that it was best to admit him due to his low oxygen levels. What our family expected to be a quick overnight stay ended up being a week-long recovery for B, and also meant his first Christmas would be spent in the hospital.
Because of work and family obligations as well as COVID restrictions, we decided it would be best if I stayed at the hospital with B, while my husband continued to care for our 2-year-old at home. During this time my husband and I were full of emotions; We were worried about the health of our 4-week-old baby, heartbroken to be spending this time away from each other, and both physically and mentally exhausted from the stress. As each day in the hospital passed, things got harder and harder. This was our family’s first time separated, and due to the COVID restrictions at the time, our toddler wasn’t able to visit us. While my husband and I were both trying to stay as positive as possible, it was hard not to feel especially sad when we realized that we would have to spend both Christmas Eve and Christmas in the hospital.
When Christmas Eve morning arrived, Shallane came to our room to tell me that she had a surprise for our family. She was able to get approval for our toddler to visit us at the hospital so our family to be together for the holiday. She didn’t stop there. Shallane and her team of nurses began decorating our room, wrapping gifts for our entire family, and brought in a special meal for us all to enjoy together. Seeing the look on my husband and son’s faces when they entered the room is something that I will never forget.
I cannot begin to express my gratitude to Shallane. She not only made what should have been a bad day special, but she made it a Christmas that we will never forget and will always cherish. Being able to be together was the greatest gift she could have given us and everything else was just icing on the cake. I will always cherish this memory and will never forget the love and care we felt from her and her team.
The day after Christmas, B had finally made a full recovery and was discharged. I honestly think that this boost of morale that Shallane and her team gave our family contributed to his recovery. Shallane not only provided us with exceptional care during our stay but she made each hard day better. Our family is truly lucky to have had her care for us during our stay and will never forget what she did for our family. Shallane Bailey is a true DAISY Nurse.
